Bullying of Gays--Fight Back!
GlobalGayz.com
October 25, 2010
In addition to raising consciousness about bullying, offering prayers and sympathies to families effected and writing supportive blog and holding vigils, we LGBT people also need to get tough and bully back to the criminals and idiots who want to hurt us.
LEARN MARTIAL ARTS TODAY!
There are many kinds of self-defense practices, from karate, to aikido, to taikwondo, to gym strength training, Jiu-Jitsu, kick-boxing, kapap and Krav Maga, and the US Marine Corps's Marine Corps Martial Arts Program, boxing...
(see more: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Martial_arts).

AND MAKE NOISE ABOUT THE BULLYING TO THE SCHOOL BOARDS, to the PTA, TO THE POLICE, TO YOUR POLITICAL LEADERS
Remember how Act Up invaded the public eye and social conscience about AIDS and got more government funding and better care!
AND DEMAND YOUR SCHOOL OR COLLEGE OFFER A GAY-STRAIGHT ALLIANCE CLUB
Learn how to do it here: http://gsanetwork.org/
There are many bullies out there and there are also many strong queers who are not afraid to stand up and fight. Become a fighter even if you are afraid to fight. Getting in a good punch to the face or a kick in the balls of a bully will make him mad but it will also make him think twice next time before bullying you. (But don't carry a weapon; it will be worse for you. Maybe mace.)
The public project going around called 'It Gets Better' is good for general awareness.
But personally we need to 'Get Strong'.

Yet Another Gay Teen Suicide
GlobalGayz.com
December 20, 2010

Since I posted this originally on October 2, there have been three more gay teen suicides, in Oklahoma, Michigan and Pennsylvania. In addition I have found out about four other earlier deaths. So I'm re-posting this blog entry with the updated names and stories:
Recent 2010 gay suicides and others from preceding years are tragic and shameful wounds on our culture where public homophobia is still legal with no national legislation to outlaw such hate speech and action--including school bullying and harassment. Public homophobia (in religions, politics, schools, corporations, sports, military, boy scouts, etc.) has a strong influence on vulnerable gay (LGBT) youth who get the message that gay is bad which leads some to reject and harm themselves (homophobia turned inward) The results are seen here in these in these profoundly sad stories:
Recently deceased gay youth:
17-year-old Eric Mohat of Ohio, March 29, 2007
11-year-old Carl Walker-Hoover of Massachusetts, April 7, 2009
11-year-old Jaheem Herrera from Georgia, April 16, 2009
17-year-old Tyler Long from Georgia, October 17, 2009

How Religion Is Killing Our Most Vulnerable Youth
(Gay) Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of New Hampshire;
Senior Fellow, Center for American Progress
October 15, 2010
An increasingly popular bumper sticker reads, "Guns Don't Kill People -- Religion Kills People!" In light of recent events I would add religion kills young people: gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender young people.

Perhaps not directly, though. And religion is certainly not the only source of anti-gay sentiment in the culture. But it's hard to deny that religious voices denouncing LGBT people contribute to the atmosphere in which violence against LGBT people and bullying of LGBT youth can flourish. (photo right, Bishop Robinson)
The news is filled with the tragedies of teenaged boys who were gay and decided to end their living hell by committing suicide. Maybe they weren't even gay, but merely perceived to be by their peers, who harassed, taunted, and threatened them unmercifully...
Despite the progress we're making on achieving equality under the law and acceptance in society for gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender people, why this rash of bullying, paired with self-loathing, ending in suicide? With humility and heartfelt repentance I assert that religion -- and its general rejection of homosexuality -- plays a crucial role in this crisis…
It is not enough for good people -- religious or otherwise -- to simply be feeling more positive toward gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender people. Tolerance and a live-and-let-live attitude beats discrimination and abuse by a mile. But it's not enough. Tolerant people, especially tolerant religious people, need to get over their squeamishness about being vocal advocates and unapologetic supporters of LGBT people. It really is a matter of life and death, as we've seen...

The Great Diva Has Died--Joan Sutherland
GlobalGayz.com
October 13, 2010

Today would have been my father's 98th birthday. Sadly he is long gone. One of his personal legacies to me was his love of classical music and opera. Together we listened to Toscanini conduct the NBC Symphony Orchestra and listen to Maria Callas and Leonard Warren sing at the Metropolitan Opera House with Milton Cross as radio host. Later in life came Joan Sutherland (photo right) whose beautifully pure voice touched my soul (doubly so with Pavarotti). I saw her perform live twice and was in awe of her, as well as from her recordings and Met appearances.
Equally blessed by a cultivated father and great singers my life has a rich and deep quality-of-being that I constantly appreciate. I cannot imagine a life without Beethoven, Mahler, Verdi, Bellini or Wagner, among so many other great artists who float my life.
Now Joan Sutherland has died. I feel a light has gone out but of course she lives on in her recorded legacy, as does Pavarotti (whose birthday is also today). There is clearly an elevated status that great artists bring to civilization that lifts it above the muck of politics and mire of homophobia that lower minds like to wallow in. When I feel dismayed about the pathetic state of common human affairs--religious, legal, financial, social, military, political--I turn to sublime affairs, the sounds of great music and the distances of astronomy. Getting above the daily fray is essential for my soul and I am blessed to have a host of great people who help me there and a father who pointed me to that tune.
May Dame Joan sing to the gods.

Yet Another Gay Teen Suicide
October 10, 2010
A 19-year-old gay man from Norman, Oklahoma has taken his own life, and his parents say a hate-filled recent City Council meeting he attended may have driven him over the edge.

Murder by Speech
Toxic speeches from the mouths of 'righteous' people were essentially the perpetrators, the killers of this fine young man. Venom spewed out against homosexuality during a city hall meeting overwhelmed this naturally-born-gay man and poisoned his self esteem and self control. Now he is dead thanks again to the insanity of homophobes, some of whom justify crucifying gay people based on ambiguous and time-twisted misinterpreted verses from the man-made Bible (not the words of Jesus).
Bullying of gay youth by callous other young people might be understood due to their lack of maturity, but to hear alleged grown-ups spread homophobic curses against gay citizens--including gay youth--is unforgivable. It is among the worst forms of bullying since it comes from adults who are supposed to be role models and also be 'good Christians'. It is a great sadness and and curse in our free society; it's an abuse of liberty to condemn people who are different.
This is a country of differences. Historically minority groups have always been targeted by the majority (mostly WASP) but over time they have mostly been absorbed into the majority--Jew, Irish, Asian, Black. The Gays and Hispanics are the last big minorities to be targeted by hate speech. At least the Hispanics are 'only' culturally discriminated against whereas the Gays are also religiously discriminated against, so it will take longer for them to be accepted.
Meanwhile gay youth will continue to feel bad about themselves. They need all the adult approval they can get--and adults know this. A great shame on the homophobes in Norman, Oklahoma who drove this young man to despair.
But combating homophobia is not easy: http://dailycaller.com/2010/10/09/suicide-surge-schools-confront-anti-gay-bullying/

Homophobia Kills--Looking Deeper Into Tyler's death
GlobalGayz.com
October 3, 2010
I find it strangely ironic that the two Rutgers University students charged with invasion of privacy that led to the death of a gay student, Tyler Clementi (photo right) are both from ethnic minorities in America. Dharun Ravi is of Indian (Asia) descent and Molly Wei is from a Chinese family.

This is not a racist blog but rather the opposite: I am puzzled that two students with different foreign-culture backgrounds--who certainly understand they are 'different' and are aware of minority-bias in America--could have turned on another minority person, even if jokingly, in an attempt to humiliate him. Was his homosexuality more marginal, of lesser status, or 'worse' than their ethnic difference to the degree they felt impelled target him for public mockery? Minorities turning on minorities of lesser status? Like blacks picking on Puerto Ricans picking on Mexicans, picking on Guatemalans, picking on native Kuna indians?
I do think Ravi and Molly's (photos left) behavior smacks of homophobia, perhaps not overtly intentional but distinct nevertheless. Would they have videoed anyone having sex? A straight black person with a white one? An Asian with an African? Or just a 'regular' guy and a girl? I doubt it. There was

Behind this intent to injure I think there was a prurient sexual urge behind their desire to watch two guys getting it on. It is a researched fact that fantasy plays a strong role in people's sex lives. Straight men get off on watching two lesbians, as revealed in statistics from the porno industry. Many gay men like heterosexual sex videos. The industry serves every variant of sexual desire. In this case, two (presumedly) straight people wanted to oogle two homosexual men having sex.
Why? Why would they even give a second thought to two consenting adults behind closed doors? Let along want to spy on them? Let alone video them and knowing, at least, the likely college dorm consequences (and obviously blind to further repercussions).
The explanation for their trespassing moves into the subconscious, a huge morass of human desire, fantasy, hunger, emotion, symbolism, unmet needs and vague sprawl--a place that few people want to understand. Yet ignorance of such motives leaves us at to the door of darkness about their (and our) behavior. Ravi and Molly operated in the dim fog of their own separate desires. When questioned they will say they were just goofing around, having fun, or "I dunno…it just happened." Hardly.
There is now a public outcry against bullying and harassment resulting from this and other recent gay suicides. The focus will be on outward behavior, learning respect and tolerance and kindness, as it should be. Dealing with the hidden desires of perpetrators to hurt others unfortunately will take deeper insight. Homophobia is fueled by many sources in our society--religion. politics, sports, corporations, family bias, personal fear, government, military, schools…
I doubt it will ever be eradicated since its deepest source of fuel is hidden in the recesses of our unconscious souls where tribal conflict, nationalistic wars, territorial rage, sexual confusion and fear of 'differentness' lurk.
For now, perhaps Tyler's and the other six recent gay suicides may at least cause a tiny light to shine into that darkness and evoke a bit more tolerant behavior toward other students and neighbors.
-------------------
Last week, columnist and adviser Dan Savage and his husband, Terry, sat down before a camera and talked about their experience with bullying and how good their life became once they left school. "We wanted to show them that happiness was possible in the future," Savage said in a phone interview. He asked people to submit similar videos to a YouTube channel, It Gets Better. More than 200 videos have been uploaded to the site. "It's not a solution; it's not a magic curative," Savage said, but it is a small step to counteract the bullying, to give the teenagers an idea that they are not going through this alone. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7IcVyvg2Qlo&feature=player_embedded#!

There was standing room only at the Tehachapi (California) First Baptist Church Friday afternoon, as the community gathered to remember 13-year-old Seth Walsh, who took his own life last week after being bullied for being gay. 13-year-old Texas teen Asher Brown, September 23, 2010:
Eighth-grader Asher Brown, 13, killed himself last week.

Brown, his family said, was "bullied to death" — picked on for his small size, his religion and because he did not wear designer clothes and shoes. Kids also accused him of being gay, some of them performing mock gay acts on him in his physical education class, his mother and stepfather said. Asher's parents said they had complained about the bullying to Hamilton Middle School officials during the past 18 months, but claimed their concerns fell on deaf ears.

Raymond Chase has committed suicide. Chase, a student of culinary arts at Johnson & Wales University in Providence, Rhode Island, hung himself. The gay group Campus Pride sent out a statement about Chase's death: "The loss of Raymond this week is the second college LGBT-related suicide in a week and the fifth teenage LGBT suicide in three weeks. The suicide of this openly gay young man is for reasons currently unknown; however, the recent pattern of LGBT youth suicides is cause for grave concern,” remarked the group's executive director, Shane Windmeyer.
